    Hey all,

So we got the HVX 200, and love it. However, I find that on occasion we have no audio in the native modes (720/30pn and 720/24pn). This problem shows up on occasion, and there is no rhyme or reason to when it occurs.

except, it occurs in the most inopportune moments.

I switch out of either of those modes, and I have audio in all other modes, both hd and sd. Occasionally, audio shows up when I switch BACK to the native mode. But not always.

Has anyone else had this problem, or heard from anyone who has? We foolishly attempted to contact Panasonic tech support. 2 emails and over a week later, no one bothered to get back to us.

It is unfortunate mostly because of the added disc space that the non-native modes take up. More P2 switching means more work for me, as I am the laptop Assistant on most shoots. And I don’t like to work that hard! Please help me.

    Thanks,
    Allen Baldwin

Hmm- that could be one of a few things.

1- there’s a problem with the internal audio circuitry of your camera. Not super likely but if true needs to be serviced.

2-Some connection or power issue- one of your mic cables is bad, you’ve accidentally switched from line to mic, or not switched phantom power on, or turned the audio pot way down.

3- You’re shooting in a variable frame rate. Remember if you shoot slow-mo or high-speed you don’t get any audio recording.

I’d set the camera up in a controlled environment and run a bunch of tests to see if you can track down the problem.

What if the frame rate just says 1/30, in 30pn mode? Would that affect it?

That sounds like a shutter setting not a frame rate.

Yep. My bad. the framerate is in 30.

We have done some tests in the office, and can’t really find any sort of reason why it would do what it does. We are on a shoot now, and had it not work. So we switched out of Native mode and into “Standard” 720/24p. Then we went back to 720/30PN. Audio was there. Who knows why.

However, this “fix”, switching from one mode to another, only works occasionally. Other times, nothing happens.

Thanks for the help. I went through your book for the HVX200 twice trying to figure this out. Nice to hear from the man himself. I will take a look at my framerate settings.

If the frame rate you’re shooting at doesn’t match the frame rate you’re recording at, there will be no audio.

What this means is: if you’re shooting in 720/30pN, your frame rate *must* be set at 30 fps, or you won’t get audio.

If you’re shooting in 720/24pN, your frame rate *must* be set at 24 fps, or you won’t get audio.

Where the problem comes in is if you manually set your frame rate to 24fps, and then you change your recording format to 30pN. At that point you’re recording in 30pN at a 24fps frame rate, hence no audio. Or the other way around, recording in 24pN with a frame rate at 30.

One way to avoid this entirely is to use the “DEFAULT” frame rate setting. That’ll go to 30fps in 720/30pN, and 24fps in 720/24pN, and that will ensure that you’re always recording audio.

Yes, I would definately make sure that the frame rate in the Camera Settings Menu was the same as the PN setting in the Record Menu. If you find that these are in agreement and you have the problem, then you need a service center.

Please contact me about the Support line off list, I would like to know when you called and left a message, they should always call a cuwstomer back.
