A client sent me a bunch of MPEG-2 video clips from his Sony Handycam. I imported the clips into Premiere Pro CS3 and there is no audio.

Client says when he plays the clips on his computer (windows) they all have audio. I’ve tried to open these files in 10 different programs and I don’t have any audio on my end (I’m on a Mac).

Does anybody know why this happened and (more importantly) how I can access the audio for these clips?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi Nate,

I am by no means an expert, but maybe be I can help…

When it comes to MPEG-2 files, I know that some programs export the audio and video as separate files. Perhaps the client is only sending you the video file.

Download the software from this link (its free and the file size is small):

    https://mediainfo.massanti.com

It gives you detailed info on any video file. Use it to check if there is there is actually audio information on the clips in question.

If there is then you know your mac just isn’t recognizing the audio. If there isn’t then you know your client isn’t providing you with what you need.

    Hope this helps, Mike

Likely the audio is Dolby and premiere cant decode it. On the PC side we would copy the adac3dec.dll from Encore’s Program folder into Premiere’s to fix that.

Sorry, I meant to say “thanks” a couple of weeks ago. I appreciate the help guys. I upgraded to CS4 and all of a sudden, I could import the clips with sound. So the audio data was inside the MPEG-2 files, I just couldn’t see it before. Must have been a codec issue.

Is there a fast way to have the video clips on the timeline “refresh” so that the audio pops onto the first Audio track, aligned with the video clips?

    Thanks,
