I don’t ask Vegas to do anything, but I get “Not Responding”.

I found 37 results for “Not Responding” in the Vegas search forum, but almost all are related to doing some action or another (except “vegas pro 8.c” which I read in full but does not pertain).

After shutting down my computer, I open a new Notepad.exe file, then open my Vegas project, then, when it’s all loaded, I switch to Notepad, switch back, and find Vegas is Not Responding. Usually it responds after 2 minutes or so; sometimes it hasn’t responded after 8 minutes, when I give up and exit Vegas. This does not happen with every switch between windows, but I’d guess 2/3.

I have a new HP laptop with a dual core processor, >100 GB free space, Vista with service pack 1, and Vegas Pro 8.b.

It seems the problem does not occur if Vegas is opened without loading a project or adding new media.

I removed my full-res source files from the project, thinking they might overtax Vegas, even though they aren’t actually used in any way (they aren’t parent media of subclips, and the timeline is empty). That did not help. My project now consists of 60 low-res copies of captured video (35 hours; 512 kbps video, 80kbps audio, 360×240), and 80 subclips (from 5 of those low-res copies of captured tapes).

Why would switching to another program and back cause Vegas to stall/crash?

(I can’t even switch windows and work on something else until it starts responding – because that makes the problem start again.)

Edit: This may only happen when the project media window is open (any view – details, basic or thumbnails). I just had this thought – I can’t test it now because I have to go out.

The problem occurs whether the Project Media tab is open or not.

    Options – Preferences – General
Deselect the option ” Close media files when not the active application”.

    I am gushing gratitude.
    Thanks.

(P.S. Does Sony Vegas have a suggestion site? I ought to suggest they make “Close media files when not the active application” not default. Perhaps it’s fine if you are only working with a few media files.)

Actually, generally speaking, you WOULD want them to close when not the active application. Suppose you have a photo at the beginning of the timeline. You now decide you need to make a change to that photo. If Vegas closes when not active, you can start your photo application, make the changes needed, save it, and when you switch back to Vegas the changes will automatically be there.

Now you’ve switched the setting and you’re trying the same thing. You can open the file, change it, but you can’t SAVE it because Vegas has it open. So you save under a different name and change it in Vegas or you exit Vegas, save it, and restart Vegas.

Great point. Thanks. If I had a computer dedicated to video editing (and supporting programs like photo editing), I would not need to change out of Vegas as frequently as I do. I now see that for professional video editors, the default is what it should be.
