you don’t say what format you’re cutting on, but personally would not have the 4 x drives striped. Far better to have them 2 x striped, so that physically separate drives, i.e. one RAID for edit material, another for rendered material. That way you would be certain that render is being carried out on a drive that is not being read, which would be faster than 4 x striped. IMHO. And safer too, since you’re not using Raid 5.

The purpose of partitioning for performance is to isolate PHYSICAL drives. What you have done is created ONE physical drive by striping and any partitioning you do is pointless because it’s all one stripped drive. If you are using RAID 0 and any single drive fails, you will loose your entire computer! C:, D: E: F:… all gone!!! In that configuration, any one drive is a single point of catastrophic failure and this is very dangerous.

If you are going to stripe all of your discs, you should be using a minimum of RAID 5 so that you can recover from a single drive failure. It doesn’t matter how you partition after that because the data is written to all of the drives so you gain nothing performance wise by partitioning except maybe the convenience of backup.

If I were to configure these drives, I would use one drive for C: and place the OS and all of your programs (Vegas, DVD Architect, etc.) on that drive. Use the second drive as D: and use that for any stock media and for rendering to. Take the last two drives and set them up as a 600GB RAID 0 E: drive for all of your video projects. Do all editing on the RAID 0 E: drive and render final DVD output to the D: drive. You don’t need a fast drive to render too because your renders will be hopelessly CPU bound.

Just to recap:

1 x 300GB C: for OS and programs
1 x 300GB D: for media and renders
2 x 300GB E: RAID 0 for video capture and all video work

It is important that you also have external storage for backing up the RAID 0. I’m sure there are lots of other valid configurations that others will suggest but this is what I would do and have done on my NLE computer.

Thanks guys, since today is sunday, i cant do much cause my machine is in the office, so i’m collecting info for tomorrow big changeover.

Its my bad if i havent give ya guys all the details yet, basically i’m using this 2 machine for yearly university graduation event recording.

My boss like video stuffs therefore he bought all this for “me” to play. yup not him but me.
CUrrently my final setup would be a

Datavideo SE800DV with 4 panasonic DVX100 firewire input for record and
firewire output to firewire hub, which then connected to a Datavideo HDD recorder and
the NLE machine with subsequently using firewire connection to vegas to capture everything.
then come this final part which is the editing. Thats why i’m asking what should be the best configuration for this NLE workstation.

The convocation is on 19th of April and i have another issue with the SE800 output to broadcast to all the students with 2 projectors.
Since SE800 only have firewire output as digital the rest are analog output which result in low quality broadcast.

I guess the configuration is still the same right?
