Upgrade Adrenaline to Nitris DX ?

We are on the edge of upgrading our 5-year old AVID Adrenaline to the new Media Composer Nitris DX. We are generally happy with the Adrenaline and HD is really not a major part of our business yet. We have been primarily a Digi-beta house, but will likely move to all P2 after the first of the year.

It is really our outdated HP 8000 that is driving our move. We are adding new Caldigit storage to replace our AVID Quiet drives and the 8000 does not support eSata or PCIe.

I am looking for input from any other Adrenaline users who have made a similar move. For about the same cost I can make the move to FCP and enter the non-AVID hardware tethered world. Or wimp out and just upgrade the computer and wait until next year for new hopefully cheaper AVID hardware.

I would love to hear from other Adrenaline users who have made the move to Nitris DX.

If you are already Avid savvy, why not stick with the platform you know?

Granted, Nitris DX costs more than FCP / Kona. But you also get more I/O with DX as in analog audio, composite video, etc.

The real price difference when all is said and done is probably about 10K. So how long will it take for you to recoup 10K in increased productivity as you don’t have to learn a whole new software, find all of its bugs, and develop workarounds for them?

If your time is really cheap, go the FCP route.

If your time is worth money, stick to the Avid world.

    my .02 cents

Since you said you don’t do much HD work, I would stick with your adrenaline and just buy a 8600 or whatever the Hp new Z series is (z800 maybe?)

or get a mac pro, then you can still run your avid and have the option for FCP (though if you like avid, odds are your not gonna like FCP)

you can still use your adrenaline hardware with either of these options

I agree with Scott Cumbo. You don’t need the Nitrus DX. Just use your money for a powerful HP8600 or Z800 and a fast and big Storage. You say that you will move to P2 that means that you don’t need a hardware anymore. With a software only MC you can transfer your P2 material in no time and even export to P2 back after finishing editing. You need a hardware as an I/O box for professional monitor(Componenet/SDI) and for Digital cut to tape, and for those needs Adrenalin is just great.
