Hi I just posted RE: burning something to dvd, but now i need a hand regarding settings for my new project.

Its going to be a 15min wedding video that i will make in DVD, Blu Ray and digital copy.

My footage is MTS from a sony HDR (1440×1080) and MOD files frm a JVC (720×576) and Sony SLR (1280×720). All these are 25 fps

DO i therefore make it in 1440 and the rest will be not as good quality (i only use the JVC footage for about 1 minute in total over the video). Most footage is sony HDR, and 25% is the SLR footage.

    Thanks for any opinions!

Yes, that’s what I would do. If the majority of the footage is HDV (1440) then make your project match HDV and Vegas will up-convert the other footage to match. Your DVD delivery should look fine but your Blu-ray might show the difference between the lower and higher resolution footage.

The last time I tried mixing PAL HDV (1440) and DV (720), the difference was very noticeable on the DVD when using a 1440 project template. HDV was noticeably much crisper, but there was noticeable tearing on fast pans in the DV footage, plus DV looked muddy. Luckily for me, the client had requested only standard-def DVD (720), so I used that as my project settings.

In my case, the mixing of footage was accidental (one of the OP’s camera’s was set to DV whilst all other camera’s were HDV), and generally should be avoided. Although I have multiple HDV camera’s, 2 of which are pretty close in specs (FX1 and Z1P), getting them to match is not always easy. In a multi-cam shoot it pays to use matched cameras. I even avoid mixing CCD and CMOS camera’s, to try and maintain a consistent look and feel.

    Thanks nigel for your input.

Im currently making it in 1440×1080 with only 2 or 3 shots in JVC camera and all are tripod-no camera movemtn. Ive got to play with the colour as its SHOCKING but they are imperative shots so i cant do without.

I wouldlove matching DSLRs or something but im just amatuer!! 🙁

    Thanks again for the input!

I am a semi-pro, and shoot weddings and live events as a pro hobby. I started to build it as a business, but the wedding market to a price dive in 2006-7. I was lucky to be coached in a theatre environment by a pro who communicated to me via a headset.

People who like my work are generally prepared to pay half the market price, and I reckon I deliver quality that is equal to some of the pros. I just do it as a hobby now.

One way to simply match footage is to do a manual white balance on all of the cameras at the same time. It gets them close to looking the same. I usually run at 50 fps (not auto) and leave my cameras on auto-gain and auto-iris (as I once had an op who didn’t know how to adjust them properly). Focus varies from manual to auto, depending on what’s going on at the time. I leave the zoom up to the op 🙂
