Maybe it’s because I am a former Avid Xpress user and a current FCP editor that I do not understand the reasoning behind this on Avid Media Composer 4:

I like to use the ‘next edit’ shortcut keys (a & s) to go to specific edit points on the timeline. The annoying thing that happens when I do this is the trim bars appear on all clips on active tracks at the edit point I went to. Most of the time I am not looking to trim so I need to get out of trim mode in order to do anything. I know it’s a small inconvenience, but it disrupts the flow.

I’m just wondering if A. there is a way to avoid this and B. why it is set up this way. I’m sure there is a reason. How do seasoned MC editors utilize this function quickly and effectively? Is there a smoother way to, for instance, lift a segment between two exact edit points?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

There are two different ways to go to the next edit. One goes there and puts you in trim mode, the other just takes you to the next edit. I vaguely recall that in Xpress Pro, the keyboard mapping was slightly different.

Anyway, the buttons you are looking for are named Fast Forward and Rewind in the Move tab of the Command Palette.

Keyboard mapping would allow you to place those where you would like them.

I’m in the same situation, and the trick Job suggested is the one I use. Replacing the ‘Next Edit’ functions of A and S with ‘Fast Forward’ and ‘Rewind’ will function almost identically to Xpress except that it will not automatically select the tracks that correspond to the edit when you us Alt + A or S like Xpress did. The track selection will remain unchanged as you hold alt to go to the next edit, which can be good and bad depending on what your doing.
