    I kept wondering when someone would come out with a Full Frame Video Camera. Well here it is:

    I see they are calling the FF sensor in the NEXVG900 a “35mm Full Frame Sensor” Yet the sensors in the FS-700, FS100, F3 and higher end cams like the Arri Alexa are using, “Super 35mm sensors.” My understanding is that a Super 35mm sensor is equal in size to a 35mm film frame. I’m under the impression that “Full Frame” is more like a 65mm film frame size. Is that correct? And if so, why is “35mm” being used to describe two different sized sensors? (Super 35mm is a 1.5 crop).

    Now I wonder if (when?) the next version of the F3 or FS700 will have a FF sensor….or the next version of the yet to be shipped Canon C-100, will have a FF sensor.

    Super 35mm is about the same size as APS-C so the VG900 is about 2.33x the size of the FS700 sensor. The FS700 and C100-C300 have APS-C size sensors.

    The VG900 uses the entire senso,r but the output is a 1920×1080 image. How does it achieve this? Can anyone help me out on this or point me to an answer? Thanks

    Troy,
    I am not exactly clear on your question.

    Are you saying how could various sizes of sensor still give 1920 x 1080 output?

    The difference is the distance between each sensor pixel. Same number of pixels, just spread out farther on the same silicon subtrate. The lens has to be designed to spread the image out over that full area. And, therefore has a shallower depth of field. The coveted shallow depth of field.

    In the higher end cameras that are advertising 4 k and above, they do have more pixels, however they are able to subsample to still give you a 1920 x 1080 if you want compatiblility.

    The VG900 does use the entire 24mp FF sensor to make a 6000×4000 pixel still jpeg/Raw image. In video mode the VG900 sub-samples a 1920×1080 image like other FF DSLRs and APS-C camcorders.

    I wanted to have the vg900 use the entire sensor (4×3) in video mode at the highest bit-rate.

    But like you said, this can only be done when taking still images.

    If I.could use the whole sensor in video mode, then I could use my anamorphic
    lens (2x) to utlize the entire chip for scope aspect. But it doesn’t appear possible.
