I am new to Final Cut Pro, but I am hoping to use it to edit a video podcast I am working on. I want to create a newscast style layover for the video with two spots “talking heads” with a the rest of the screen matte with some text describing who is talking and what the topic is.

Could someone point me in the right direction. I have been looking for tutorials, but am sad to say, I don’t even know what the technical terms are to search for. I have been assuming that Motion (together with FCP) is the right tool for the job. Is there a name for what I am trying to do that would make it easy to find more information on the web?

    Thanks,

    Mike

From what you describe, you want to shoot two heads against a green screen, then use a chroma key filter to put a new background in. Is this what you mean? I’m not too clear, so try again and I’m sure someone can help.

Thanks for the response Ben. Part of my problem is not knowing the proper terminology.

I am not thinking of a green screen, as much as merging two video files together. Sort of like a split screen, but with each video in its own box. I put a picture of what I am thinking of up at

Is there a name for that type of overlay? The picture I uploaded is a spoof, but shows the type of template I am looking to use for more serious stuff.

    Thanks again for your help.

    I used to direct newscasts… it’s called either a split-screen or a cross-talk depending on the shop you’re in.

What you do is create the background without the talking heads. Build boarders (even drop shadows) into it where you would want the heads to be. Then you just shoot your interviews straight up, and squeeze them back (cropping if necessary) into position.

As a matter of style, you want to be sure your interview subjects are addressing the camera, (not an interviewee off camera, as you would normally do).

    Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I have been making some progress learning Final Cut and Motion. I am thinking I will create a Motion Master Template with the background and then two drop zones for the video. From there I can import it into FCP and drop the two videos into the drop zones. I am also hoping to make some of the text dynamic so I can change the captions to reflect the story/interview. My graphic arts skills are a little weak though. If anyone knows of someone that could create the Motion Templates for me at an affordable rate, please let me know. I would rather pay someone and have it look sharp, than do it myself and have it look like someone’s first try. It is fun to learn the tools though.

    Thanks,

    Mike
