Hi I just watched the video tutorial for Serious Effects & Compositing, I’m just wondering, if I wanted to shoot some similar footage. Is it necessary that I have a green screen? I know it would obviously make keying much easier, but I just don’t have one available to me. So I would need to use the pen tool to key the background out from where ever I shot it on every or every other frame, correct?

Well technically… yeah. But you’d be better off buying one or even making one from your local fabric store.

Here is a one at a good price (about $60 bucks), but you can shop around.

It’s worth it to get even a 6×6 ft green screen since the time you save will easily pay for itself. Not to mention you’ll be practicing industry standards and yeild better results.

Yeah I see your point but then I would need to get some studio lights to, no?

Come on! What’s next? You don’t have tapes?

No seriously now. Why don’t you check for a rental company in your neighborhood. You could rent a green screen as well as the appropriate lighting. If you are frank with the rental company, they may even make you a special deal.
If you are in the NY area shoot me an e-mail and I will give you something to work with.

    Salut.

    Tapes? What are those? hahah

Honestly its not a matter of renting the stuff, its a matter of always wanting more. I’m getting ready to graduate from college in May and don’t exactly have any money, and will be looking at paying off school loans 🙁 I mean I could think of 50 million things to do with a green screen, but then I think that I don’t really have anywhere to put it in my apt. and if I did do these things it would just be for my own benefit…

Jack. Your last post was exactly what I meant with being frank when you talk to a rental guy. I am in the rental business since years now and I as well as my competitors always sponsor ambitious students.
I think you should give it a go as it may help you to do the thing right from the beginning.

    Salut & good luck.

Yes, in the “Making of…” section, we get to see the guys fumbling with their cups of coffee in overly-caffeinated hands with bags under their eyes and along side them, a jar of peanut butter with spoon for nourishment.

It takes a lot of audio filtering to remove the sound of the tongue sticking to the roof of the mouth as they speak but these guys are dedicated — dedicated, indeed.

    :o)

Yes, I agree with you Serge about wanting to sponsor “ambitious” students but to be quite frank, from re-reading Jack’s posts, I’d not read him as being ambitious. In fact, the impression that I got is that there’s little passion behind what he says — a lot of common sense but little passion. More the makings of an accountant than an artist. An artist has to have what they need for their craft — it’s a burn and passion and they can’t let it go. Commonsense is little the domain of the artist.

Not to be negative but setting your goal to first pay off all your student loans before you get any of the tools that you will need to pursue a career in the arts, is a sure-fire sign that you won’t be in the arts long and will be one of those students whose degree has little to do with what they end up doing in their workaday lives…
