newbie: why is 75% of my video shaded black?
Hi, there, I made my first video for Sony Vegas 12. It’s a trailer consisting of lots of clips, titles, and audio.
The edits look good, but I’ve noticed that in significant portions of the rendered video, a large rectangle is shaded. Examples:
in the HDV video clip with a title at bottom, there the right hand bar and bottom bar under the title looks normal, but the rectangle of the rest of the screen looks dark/shaded.
This also happens with when there is a static image + title. The right strip looks normal, the rest of the photo looks shaded.
Just guessing, it may be that the problem is that layer for titles should be transparent or less opaque or that I need to assign some compositing order.
When I add a still image to the video, the default background is black — and that is good. But if the image is supposed to take precedence over the title, won’t that black out the screen?
I have Douglas Spotted Eagle’s excellent book (and there’s the Sony help besides). but at my current low understanding), there are lots of dials and buttons which could potentially alter this. So could you point me to one or two features which might control this or cause this effect to happen?

Hey Robert–
First thing I’d check: On your supers, RT-click > “Properties” > “Media” > “Alpha Channel”… have a look at if selecting “Premultiplied” (or one of the other selections) helps.

Thanks for the input. Raw video has premultiplied already selected.
Title has None already selected.
I tried reversing these and nothing happened.
by the way, “supers” = the little boxy things you can slap on the timeline, right?
Back to reading the manual…

Sorry, by “supers” I just mean anything “superimposed” on your footage.
Check the alpha channel on the still image you’re trying to “super” over the footage; I suspect you either don’t have one at all or the black (zero alpha) area isn’t actually zero (?)

Check your track composting mode that the title is on. It should be set to Source Alpha. It looks like it’s not.
