  • newbie question…whats up with nesting?

    hi

sometimes when i am working with a nested sequence i double click on it and it opens a copy as opposed to focusing on the one thats open? and the copy that opens needds to be rendered, as opposed to the original which is all rendered

ie i have a main sequence, call it “main” and i take 2 shots in that sequence and make a nested sequence which i call “shots” i will effect both shots, then go back to my main sequence, and when i click on the second iteration of the nested sequence it opens a copy of “shots” called shots, and the video plays stuttered or soft, as opposed to the first iteration which played fine

    am i nuts?

    thanx for any help

I’m not sure if I’m understanding you correctly, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt. When you double click a nested clip, it opens the elements of that nest in a separate timeline (with the name you gave when you created the nest). So if you apply effects to those clips, depending on the effect and your sequence settings and you system, it would need to render those effects in the nest.

If you want to open the nest (not the elements of the nest) in your active timeline, you can Ctrl+click (or right click) and select Open in Viewer, or hold the Option key and double click the nested clip. This will open the nest in the viewer and you can apply effects, change motions properties etc, and you should not need to rerender (unless it’s an effect that needs rendering on your computer).

    thanx boyd

i think i got it figured out.

it seems it was opening a “copy” of the nest because i had changed my main sequence settings between cutting in the first part and the second part, so fcp made a version of the nest to try and match the changes settings….i think….maybe

anyway… i was a bit under the gun so it was a bit of a blur. i usually dont post until i have thouroughly ruled out operator error etc.

i need more time with the book

    thanx again!

Actually no. Nested sequences are kinda tricky. I forget the exacts, but there are a few rules. For example copying and pasting a nested sequnce creates two nests that both refer to the same sequence. However if you duplicate via option dragging a nest, the new nest is it’s own entity. Or vice versa. I forget.

Also, if you were to duplicate a sequence you’ll get the same problems. Nests become stand alone entities in that case I think. So play with it a little to figure out how your nests are becoming “stand alone.”
