Newbie question0Sony Movie Studio 12 Planitnum
Hi-I’m a newbie with Sony Movie Studio 12. I was shot a sample clip, saved it as a project and have it on the timeline, but somehow I didi something and lost the audio. The master bus shows the audio is there, and the mute is off, but there is no sound. How do I restore it? I feel silly, but I’m hoping someone can help with this basic problem.

Hi Glenn, It’s a littel hard to understand what you might have done. Can you attach a screen capture of your screen so that we can see what you’re seeing? Perhaps someone here can spot something.

Thanks for responding. I hope I have got the screenshot correctly for you.
Basically, I shot some test footage with sound, created a project, and matched the media settings. I played back the event and had the sound. Then I tried out the Show Me How tutorial, part 4, and moved the event right/left and split the event. Then I had no sound on playback. I tried grouping, and some other guesswork type moves to try to fix it, but nothing worked. Even tho I’m an experienced PC user, I’m baffled by this. I need to master Movie Studio for professional reasons, so I will be grateful for any assistance you and the other experts here can provide. Your forum comes highly recommended, I should add.

I need to add I see a message at the ends of the timelime in white letters saying “media offline.” Does that make things any more clear?

OK, the problem is basic than what I previously described. The audio is off on everything in MS12. Other projects don’t have audio playback either even tho the sound is showing on the master bus. The sound works on the computer, and no mute buttons in the program are on. I can’t figure out what I did. I close the program and reopen it, but still no sound. Can anybody help?

You know Glenn… They say a picture is worth a thousand words… 😉
Your problem is that your audio is only recorded on the left channel and you’ve panned the audio track hard right. Since there is nothing on the right channel, you have no audio playing.
I would reset the track audio pan to center. Then right-click on the audio event and select Channels | Left Only and your audio problem with be solved. The event will be converted to mono and your audio will play out of both channels equally.

Thanks for the reply, but it leaves me with a further question-I was getting some coaching from a pro videographer (and a big fan of your forum here) who advised to set the voice tack pan to 50%, which is where it is in the screen shot. This was done to equalize the signal in the two channels of the master bus. When I was first working with the event I had the pan there with the sound OK. I goofed around, lost the sound, and then, after my last post, the restarted the computer. The sound was back. During all this the pan stayed at 50%, which indicates to me that it was something else. Can you think of any other causes for this problem?
However, I’m happy of know of the alternative method you suggest and will share that with my video coach. I’m looking to create guitar videos for YouTube and so I need to record in mono.

The proper procedure for working in mono is to set the channel to only be the left track (assuming you recorded on the left which is the default for mono). I don’t know what might have happened before but there is no need to pan at all. Make the mono track mono and everything will work as expected with the pan in the center.
