  • Newbie question on audio bit depth

Posted by Gary Childress on May 30, 2005 at 11:29 pm

I am doing my first full on uncompressed project with IO. I have edited many years in linear bays and Avids. I have used FCP for offline with DV footage.

In playing with the capture presets on in FCP5, I do not seem to have any choice on the bit depth for audio.
The sample rate is 48K which is fine since this will finish on Digibeta via SDI.

On the Avid, I always set the audio at 16 bit/48K for SDI out to digibeta.

My question: Is 24 bit going to work fine with the digibeta or does it have to be 16 bit?

Or, if it can’t be changed during digitizing from BetaSP, do I just set the sequence settings to 16 bit to get that bit depth out to the Digibeta?

    Thanks for any info.

As I don’t yet have FCP 5, I can’t comment on setting the audio bit depth. However, Digibeta is 20bit. An odd choice on Sony’s part but all the decks have been 20bit going back to D1, introduced in 1987. Possibly, further back on the BVH-2600? If you are sourcing from digibeta, you might as well work at 24bit.

    Thanks Dino,
Since Avid users have been using 16 bit 48k for years without a problem on 20 bit Digibeta, I am going to assume 24 bit will be ok as long as the sample rate is 48K.
