  • Newbie Question Importing Quicktime. files

Posted by Tom Hartman on October 21, 2024 at 7:02 pm

I am a total beginner with FCP, have just downloaded the demo. I wanted to start practicing with a few files from a recent vacation taken on an iPhone. Those files have been transferred to my Mac and show up as “Quicktime ” files on my external drive. They import into Final Cut OK (though I never found the dialog that is supposed to ask me whether I want to copy or use SOURCE file)…..but when I drag one of the movies onto the timeline, I get the attached alert….any advice appreciated (btw even if I click “CANCEL” the files DO appear in the timeline).

    Hi there,

Where are you planning to publish your video, if it is YouTube or planning to watch it on TV or computer screen you should use a horizontal format like 1920×1080 or if you want a higher quality like 4 k you can make it 3840×2160. If you are going to edit for social media, you should pick a vertical format like 720×1280 or 1080×1920. If you are in the USA you can choose 30 fps or 25 in Europe.

Thanks so much! Appreciated! This is mainly for our family to watch on our TV or computer screens…

So I started a whole new project, just to start from scratch. This time I dragged the whole folder I had of raw footage from the iPhone into an open EVENT window. This time, FCP just asked, “Do want to convert this to HDR?” and I said yes. So now my raw footage is there, but can I still choose to use the video options you suggest in some menu somewhere? I promise to take a course in this lol

    thx

    Tom

Yes, new iPhones and some other phone models shoot in HDR, which gives you a better colour management option. If all of your footage is HDR, it is better to make the sequence HDR. If you are mixing SDR and HDR, you can stick with SDR and still use your HDR footage. There is always a way. When you click somewhere empty on the timeline, choose Command J and you will see sequence settings on the far right where you see the inspector. You can make changes if you need to.
