  • Newbie question about mac mini and external previews

Posted by Samuel Frazier on April 2, 2005 at 6:14 am

I’m a PC user who just bought a mac mini (due to arrive on monday) to try out fcp. I am used to getting external previews via firewire out from computer to either my camcorder with passthrough (or a transcoder like a canopus advc-100) and then the S-video or composite to the TV or external monitor.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but FCP doesn’t work this way. Thought I read previews work through your Mac’s video out on its graphics card. If that’s the case, then is it possible to do true external previews from a mini?
Sorry, I’m obviously new here and am having a hard time finding my way around. Thanks ahead of time for any help!

FCP will work exactly the way you’re used to – Firewire output to either camcorder or transcoder.

Great, my response just got lost. But I realize the origin of my misunderstanding in a faq on the apple fcp site. It was a discussion about agp vs pci graphics cards so I got confused.
But I just bought the “Inside Apple’s Production Suite” so hopefully I won’t be as green as I am for very long.
But I appreciate you’re setting me straight. Thanks!
