hi, i’m working my way through various tutorials but i’m having problems breaking apart an imported object from turbo squid. it’s a fairly complex model of a human heart with 8,283 polygons. i can get the various different sections (main artery, minor artery etc) to break apart with a fracture object tag, but i can’t get the break up any further. the ‘disconnect’ option under structure is grey’d out…

please excuse my ignorance, is there a decent tutorial on how to do this, or if anyone can walk me through how to make a complex polygon model slowly break apart/shatter into small pieces?

    many thanks in advance…

You might want to use the PolyFX object instead of Fracture. That way you won’t have to disconnect the polygons manually as you have to do with Fracture.

Another option would be to use the Explosion FX deformer.

The down side to these solutions is that they’re limited to existing edges. Might work in your case, but if not there are a number of plugins available for shattering objects more realistically (Catastrophe, Thrausi, Geotools, to name a few).

nope. i can’t get the object to respond to the explosion fx. thrausi doesn’t work either. it must be something to do with the way this object is constructed… if you get a chance to look at the file i’d be very grateful. here’s the link (hopefully i’ve done this right)

    many thanks in advance.

Deformers have to be on the same heirarchy level as the objects their deforming, or else the child of the object they’re deforming. In this case the Explosion FX deformer will work if you place it inside of the “Heart” null.
