Newb needs help
Hi all,
I purchased Vegas 9.0 Platinum Pro a few months ago and have been experiencing major problems with trying to create a video. Once I get to about 10-12 minutes worth of video on my track it keeps shutting down, sometimes with error messages and sometimes without. Now, everytime it loads up some of the videos don’t scan in and instead are just “red”. I’ve read some of the posts about this but can’t determine the problem. I downloaded 9.0 b (although I’m not entirely sure I did it right because it still says “build 55” and I thought “b” was build 85.
I have a larger number of small clips (at this point probably around 50-60 clips usually no more than 15-20 seconds…I’m putting together a flag football highlight video), but no still pictures. I believe they are MPEG-2.

Sorry for the double post here, but for what it’s worth I wanted to update my situation. I uninstalled Vegas, re-installed it and then downloaded Platinum 9.0b, and after killing most of my processes ran it again. This time at least I could navigate/edit within the tracks but still had a bunch of events/files that were red. Could having so many files used on the track affect the performance? There are files smaller than the ones in red that work fine, and they all came from the same source (a Sony HDR SR11 handycam)

I would start by calling Sony Tech support. Only they can read the crash dumps that Vegas produces. I can see that you got an access violation while reading memory which could be a bad memory chip or even a bug in the program. Sony support can trace the dump and figure out a lot more than we can. Thanks John, I sent an email to tech support last night (being Sunday they weren’t open, and work has been crazy so I’m not sure I’ll get anybody tonight). I got an automated response saying their “initial” answer is that because I’m running Vista 64 they don’t support it (although the answer at least seemed like they might look into the error message). After I got 9.0b loaded up I got a different message, I think it was a “write” error vs. “access” for what it’s worth.
Question…do you think my processor is enough? It’s a Duo Core and they say it’s rated at 1.83 GHz, but I understood that to just be one of the processors speed (so combining them should be much more than that), the guy I bought it from said that it should be able to handle software (all other things being equal) that requires 2.8 GHz to run it.

The Sony web site states the requirement as:
# 800 MHz processor (2.8 GHz recommended for HDV and AVCHD)
If you are using HDV or AVCHD then your processor is inadequate. You can’t add the two cores up; it doesn’t work that way. If you are just using SD files then you have more than enough processing power. You said in a previous post that you “think” your files are MPEG2. You need to “know”. MPEG2 can be HD or SD.

The guy was wrong. When software specs quote a required processor speed it is quoted for a single processor. You cannot add the core speeds together because not all software tasks are multi-threaded and can take advantage of the extra cores. While a dual-core can do more work than a single core, it does not do it faster. It still does it at 1.83 GHz per CPU. It may finish faster because it can parallelize the tasks but if any one task requires 2.8Ghz, a 1.83 GHz CPU cannot provide that.

It’s AVCHD so there’s my answer. I should have done more research obviously but I had a hard time finding the answer I guess. The files are MPEG2, again, I’m not a techie but I know that is at least the type of file I was using for this “session”, I also had some of the files saved as mt2s (whatever that means). For my output resolution I had it set for 720 x 480 so I thought that’d be fine at least for doing it in SD.
Thanks for the info on the processor speed, I should have came here first! I ultimately want to do HD editing, but for now at least I can just do SD I guess until I get a better machine. Now I’ll just have to figure out how to do it in SD.
