I am planing to use 2 videos where me and me is facing each other in a long chair and talking. There is no blue background or green. It involves masking i think… Do you think, After Effects 6.5 is the tool to use? Or Combustion, and Commotion? And what is the difference between Commotion, Combustion, and After Effects?

How many space does After Effects eat?

Just need an incredibly simple mask to split the screen unless one part of you crosses into the other’s area in which you will need a more complicated mask (roto) to isolate whatever crosses “the line”.

AE, Commotion or Combustion can all do these without breaking a sweat. They are all compositors with different strengths.

Commotion is a bit older now, but still has clone/superclone, roto, tracker, auto paint tools that are still better than AE is today.

Combustion on paper is superior to AE in most ways IMO. That being said, I never use it except for the color corrector and particles because I can never wrap my head around it’s workflow. I spend more time hunting for my keyframes and figuring out why my layers aren’t showing the way I expect rather than working. Maybe because it’s because I have the attention span of a small field mouse.

    Hi Juan,

You don’t even need AE for this as any NLE would do. What you need to do is to lock your camera, shoot “me” left then “me” right, make sure that there is a tiny neutral space between the tow shots.
If you want to use a compositing program for any reason then all those you mentioned will do the trick using a simple mask.

    Salut.

I have finished trying the mask thing on Combustion. Everything is a success but there is no audio… and it’s sooo slow to import an AVI movie clip… I tried to install After Effects… the composing interface is a little similar to Combustion. I tried to use Masking thing in After Effects… I can’t believe I can only do a Circle and a Rectangle mask! And After Effects is soooo confusing! I don’t know what to do! Help?

I see… because on some frames, I need to ajust the mask manually, something like a free-form mask

    Juan,

Please use the search engine and do some research for yourself.

There are plenty of answers here in the Cow and asking the leaders to hold your hand through each and every step is both rude and shows that either you have pirated copies of After Effects (and therefore, no manual to look up) or you are one of those people who never seems willing to look up anything yourself.

I hate to be so brash and direct but you really can learn a lot about masks and mattes by using the search engine and spare the leaders here some really rudimentary questions from a guy who seems very unwilling to do any of the work himself.

    Just an observation,

    Ron Lindeboom

P.S.: Get rid of the iframe embed in your sig file or I am going to shut off your account. I have just had to go through a bunch of posts and fix them (also turn off some duplicates you posted) in which your iframe was messing with things. If you do not get it out of your posts, I will turn off your account.

I checked my profile in Creative Cow, and I think it’s gone.
