I’m playing with the “Create Nulls from Paths.jsn” script (it’s fun!), and happen to hit the Pen Tool while a null layer was selected. This caused a new cursor to appear that I am unfamiliar with (I can’t screengrab it because cursors don’t get screengrabbed). It’s the Pen icon plus a white square with a black circle or dot centered in it. It looks like a mask icon, but I’m at a loss to figure out what it is.

(And AE Help is useless, so I’m asking here.)

    What is it? Thanks!

The pen tool now shows you if it’s going to be creating a shape layer or a mask. If you have no layers selected, it should show you that it’s going to make a shape layer (star). If you have a layer selected, it should show the thing you’re seeing.
