new to vegas – rendering question – avchd video with dd5.1 audio
I have a sony hdr-sr1 consumer camera which I shoot home movies on. I’ve been looking for some time for something to edit the large amounts of avchd m2ts files that I have from this camera and have finally decided to try sony vegas out.I’m using the trial edition of vegas platinum before buying.
my m2ts files are 1440x1080i, with DD5.1 sound.I can load these files into timeline and render a project no problem.(this is futher than I got with any of the competitors such as ulead). However I’d like to render to something that preserves their qualities – i.e. filesize, HD video, DD5.1 sound. I want to play them back on a HTPC with spdif output to an av amp.
I’ve tried rendering using the WMV HD templates builtin to vegas, which work very nicely for my goals purely on my pc (using pc’s audio), give filesizes similar to the originals, and doens’t require tweaking so nice and easy to use, but this forces the use of WMA digital audio – which isn’t supported by my av amp of course, so I get no audio via the amp. This format doesn’t appear to have a DD 5.1 audio option…
I’ve experimented with avi as a rendering template but there then seem to be a gazzillion options , divx alone has many many subpages.
also selecting dd5.1 audio from within there led to complaint messages something like “vegas doesn’t support render resolution greater than 1440×1080” which seemed very odd.Can anyone suggest to me a set of rendering options that will
– preserve the same level of picture quality and file size that I have in the original AVCHD m2ts files
– give me dd 5.1 audioalternatively does anyone know a way to render back to avchd m2ts?

If you want it to play with 5.1 sound on a DVD for set top, it must be rendered to MPEG 2 with 5.1 AC3 sound. No choices. Unless of course, you want PCM audio, which some players cannot manage.

thanks for the reply. I’m not trying to play it back on a dvd player. I’m playing it back as a file on my PC on a hd monitor and/or hdtv. So the video codec can be anything that PC can handle. the audio codec I’d prefer to be dd 5.1 as I’m sending the audio to an av amp, and the original audio is 5.1 so don’t want to lose detail there. I don’t want to render to mpeg2 as that has much greater filesize than m2ts avchd.
rendering back to the orignal file’s m2ts with dd 5.1 sound would do me, but it doesn’t seem to have that option.
