  • New to Variable Frame Rates….Need some advice

Hi…I’m shooting a basketball training video and could use some slow motion shots of certain fast-paced techniques. I think variable frame rate would be better than slo-mo effect in post. How can I pull this off on a modest budget? What cameras would you recommend? I’m editing in FCP 6. I know progressive is better than interlaced, but I’ve only seen interlaced as an option on SD cameras. This doesn’t need to be done in HD (no budget for it). Not against renting HD for reasonable rate, but certainly can’t afford varicams.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

That’s what the Varicam is meant for. You shoot Varicam, then capture with the AJ-1400 deck to Firewire and FCP will conform the footage to the frame rate you shot on the camera. 60fps is the top rate which on a 24p timeline is nearly 2.5x slow motion. This looks a lot better than a post effect because you have real frames rather than interpolation.

If your budget doesn’t permit a Varicam and deck rental, the HVX200 does the same tricks albeit with smaller CCDs and prosumer optics.

How does the varicam sl0-mo quality stack up with the newer hdx900 which shoots 50 / 60 frames? the post process should be a lot more straightforward than a varicam which otherwise requires a blackmagic card or kona to output at 1080i ..etc etc..

    thanks

creating a slomo effect with the 900 is certainly not as easy as one might think.

With the Varicam, apple and avid both allow for removal of redundant frames. With Avid it is done at ingest with FCP is is done after capture using the software FRC. Capture cards like the Kona I use for this are not required if you stay in the DVCPROHD codec (FW capture)

On both camera systems the frame rate conversion is done on 720p content only, there is not a way to do in-camera slo motion at 1080.
