  • New to Premiere from FCP – advice about Mercury playback engine?

Posted by Lucy Moon on September 15, 2011 at 7:08 pm

    Hello.

My client’s Mac Pro (1,1) died so I had to buy a whole new setup and have taken a jump to Premiere and the production suite from FCP.

I’ve installed the new Mac Pro with an Nvidia Quadro 4000 and have just run a test from Premiere to encode a file as h264

My project settings (rendering and playback) appear to have updated magically to Mercury GPU rendering… and the export went like hell for leather.

Do I need to tell Premiere anywhere else that I have the card? I am running it without a display and using the stock ATI 5770 as the display video card.

    Thanks in advance.

I forgot. Anyone know of a benchmarking tool to test render times? Preferably h264 as I do loads of that.

    Hi Astrid,

I suppose you could go back to Prefs and set Mercury Engine to “software” and time out a test render, then enable “GPU” and render again, to see what the Quadro 4000 is adding for performance.
