  • New to illustrator: I want to learn a specific type of shading/colouring

    Hi all,

I have only started using Illustrator this week for an assignment that must be done in Illustrator. For my assignment, I have to make a number of “tattoo” style images.

I am interested in learning how this guy did his shading and colouring https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iFpi6b_ap8. I think he uses an opacity on his eraser and blends out the colouring but I don’t really know how to do that. I kinda know how to do it in photoshop, but its different in this program, as either the line completely disappears if I use the paint tool or it just cuts a line if I use it on the blob brush tool, no matter if I change the opacity on either. I feel I am just missing something completely – I don’t even know if this has a proper name for it.

Thank you so much in advance!

That guy switches over to Photoshop once he’s done with the line art. 😉

yeah I noticed when I looked at the video again :/

We have to do everything in illustrator though so is there any chance it can be done in illustrator, regardless?

You can, yes, but it’s kind of a tall order if you’re new to the software since you’ll probably have to start wrapping your head around gradient meshes.

Maybe look through these and see if it’s something you want to get into?

Oh cool thanks – I might cheat a little bit and use photoshop for the colouring of this assignment, but still put the last of it together in illustrator like we’re supposed to but I will definitely learn this in the future when I’m not so busy.

    Thanks for the link 🙂
