Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro New to FCP X

    So I’ve taken the plunge.
    27″ imac, 4GB on the GPU, and FCP X 10.1.1 –

I expect there to be some pain, but really.

No export , how do I export my finished edit. Oh I see is it share? Share to Master File?

No indication that it is busy doing it, if my external hard drive didn’t blink with activity, I’d have no idea it was doing anything.

And importing, how about a bigger clock, so I can see that file import is happening.

    Arrgghh learning curve.

Well, I’m here now, any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I’d suggest taking some training. Things are different but it’s all the same processes. Don’t get hung up on what things are called. I started with 10.0.0 and never looked back. I went to a Steve Martin seminar and followed up with the Ripple Training courses. There’s also Larry Jordan, Macpro Video, Izzy.com, Lynda.com and others. Don’t assume you should “just be able to do it”. Stay curious and put some effort into how the software works. It’s really great.

I’ll second Nick’s advice… do some tutorials, read about the app. At the end of the day, It’s an NLE, and will do what you want it to. You might even have fun, 😉 I’ll toot my own horn and suggest this as well…

Not training, but it may be of interest…

There is an indicator that shows progress. In the center of the application, to the left of the timecode indicator, is a circle that you can click. It brings up the background processes with include importing and exporting files.

Thanks everyone. I’m expecting the growing pains.

I’m just going to keep banging on it, until I figure it out.

Force yourself to do one training series (Ripple are good) on the basic interface/workflow. It’s different in so many ways large & small that you’ll save yourself much head-thumping. The longer you’ve been an editor the more pertinent this advice becomes!

Thanks Charlie, I checked out the page, thanks for the links.

Question – what are Roles, how do I assign them?

I’m gathering if I’m importing media, and the little circle in the bottom left of the thumbnail is not gone, then I’ve imported the media?

And on a Whiny note. I clicked on some folders and it is importing the footage from within – XDCAM-EX footage, so that is lovely. However, the the folders with audio show up in the drop down of the “event” with the audio inside them, but the folders for the video do not, although the video is being imported, any thoughts?

[Steven Gladstone] “Thanks Charlie, I checked out the page, thanks for the links.

There’s a lot of really good info from a lot of people, just takes time to digest it. And forcing yourself to slog through at least the basic parts of a tutorial is good advice. 🙂

[Steven Gladstone] “Question – what are Roles, how do I assign them?”

    Here’s a basic overview…

I’m pretty sure that indicates the progress of waveform creation/analysis…

I don’t have a lot of experience importing camera original stuff, hopefully someone else will chime in.

It takes a bit, but it’ll make sense. Then you can decide if you love it or hate it. Or, as sometimes happens, both. 😉

And if you don’t want to read, I did a tutorial on the subject when back when roles first came out. Still applies.

When you have footage in the finder that mimics the directory structure of an SD Card, FCPX treats it as such and the “import folders as keyword collections” doesn’t apply. If they are readable QT movies in a folder structure that you organized yourself, then they’ll appear in collections in the interface.
