New to 24p
Hi to all,
I hope my question can help others in the same situation. I have had my DVX 100 for a couple years and never needed to shoot 24p. I want to do a shoot in that setting and can’t afford mistakes. So I did a test run and some research. However, you usually don’t know what your missing until its too late.Please tell me, as a novice to 24p, what should I know (generally and/or specifically) about shooting, editing or even lighting 24p?
I’m using PremPro in SD.

What I’ve found in the research that I’ve done is this. If I want to get the film type look but need to stay in a 29*/30fps timeline, because maybe I’ll be inserting other video footage, I can simply shoot in “24p” mode and edit to a 30fps PremPro timeline. If I want a film type look and all of the motion attributes of film, I should shoot in “24pA” mode then edit to a 24p time line in PremPro. This is due to the 2:3 vs 2:3:3:2 pull down. I read that the 2:3:3:2 pull down is more efficient and results in a smoother onscreen motion.
As for lighting, my research says that I will need more illumination for my shadow areas since video cameras have a more narrow contrast range. Where film cameras perform better in the shadow areas and afford you more creative room for low key lighting.
But again, this is all I know and I don’t want to wait until everybody goes home to find out that something went wrong. Is there any other aspect to the 24p workflow that I should be aware of? Like for instance additional camera settings, things to look out for when editing, on what devices should the final work be displayed, what should my export settings be, will authoring in Encore undo any of the work that I did?
I hate to be so verbose but I am uncertain about these points. Please help. -
I’d strongly recommend a test shoot or two so you can learn a lot of these things for yourself. It’s not rocket science but there’s definitely some tricks to be learned.
