  • New system, slower rendering?

    Hi all,

    I’ve recently upgraded from a 2.4mhz/512mb ram system to a 2-quad2.6 / 8gb ram system.

    Exporting is noticibly slower now.

Any suggestions on what kind of culprits I should be looking for?

I notice in the task manager that PPro almost never goes about 500mb memory usage, even when rendering.

It doesn’t seem like this is something I can adjust in PPro, but maybe I’m missing something? Is there a way to force it to use more memory?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

    :)Ben

    a few additional details:
    -running XP Pro
-video card: ati 2400 (same as on old machine)
-ppro v2.0 (same as on old machine)
-disk space: about 250gb free on a WD MyBook external drive. also tried on the empty 140GB drive that came with the computer, with same results.

It is not a memory issue as much as a CPU utilization issue. Premiere 2 just does not use all your horsepower/multiple CPUs. Suspect 3.0 will do better.

    Thank for the response Mike.

Does it sound familiar that it might be _worse_ with the extra power, though? Is there some known issue I haven’t been able to find with something like the quad xeons? Only stuff I’ve seen has been positive.

    Hello,

Maybe the problem is to do with the quad, as a friend of mine said the quads were unstable which could be causing the problem of the slow rendering etc?

Interesting. I certainly haven’t been impressed with either the performance or the stability of this new system. It’s freezing all the time when working with PPro, which is all I’m using this box for; haven’t even installed anything else on it, really. No Office or other apps.

Wonder how one would diagnose that for certain. Was thinking about removing the CPUs one at a time and seeing if I noticed any change.
