I’m not sure if this is the best section for this question but anyway.

I am currently looking to start a business in motion graphic, video production and graphic design.
I will be using AE no matter which system I end up going for and I want the system to run AE the best, in other words it is the most important program for me.

At the moment I can’t decide between a windows based system or an Apple. I currently use Adobe video collection but would be happy changing over to final cut for video editing. I have read some things about motion but can’t see it replacing AE for me. I will also be using photoshop alot.

Money is not really an issue, although keeping it low would help. By low i mean under AU$10,000. Staying with windows seams to help me here as I can get more for the money with the adobe software packages.

Any help with video card choice, how much memory you recommend and also processor recomendations would be great. Does anyone run after effects on a new dualcore AMD? I would like to know how they compare to a G5 dual 2.3.

    Thanks, Josh

The Mac or Windows for AE question has been asked many times so definitely do a search of the archives.

My response is: If you want to use Apple apps like FCP, DVD studio pro, Motion, Shake, then get a Mac. If you want cheap and mod abilty get a PC. If you plan on doing a lot of 3D i would stick with PC. If you are picky about the elegance of your OS then get a Mac.

If you are a fan of the video games like myself then get a PC.

I have both. That way there isn’t an issue. You’ll natuarally find things you prefer doing on each machine. I find that whenever doing such things like motion graphics, PS, AI, and general use of the OS I use the G5. For games and 3D I generally use the PC. But I set it up to be more of a workstation so I’m not dealing too much with the OS. I personally haven’t done a speed test between the 2 using the exact same app. I think Steve Roberts uses AE frequently on both machines. I think he said there isn’t much of a speed diff.

But My PC which is about the same speed with a much better vid card was half the cost of my G5.

Indeed. IMO, AE will not determine your choice of platform. It’s all the other apps, as Chris stated. Well, basically.

I’m splitting a job between the Win and Mac boxes right now, because of a plugin that I only have on the Win side.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I’m going to go with the mac, I thought about it alot and it seams the best for what I’ll be doing.

    Thanks again, Josh
