NEW SYSTEM FOR FCP
I’m out of space to run the FCP studio 2 (with its 60 GIGS of space needed!) and i can’t put it on my second media drive. Does anybody know why this is? Can you Run FCP off of an external and if you CANT what kind of internal would you buy?

In each of the apps that have templates, you can install them on an external, but keep the apps on your internal… will save you about 40gigs or so… might do that instead of another drive.

With the price of big sata drives these days, why not get a large system drive (500, 750, 1TB). Plenty of room for all the apps. Clone your old drive to the new one and then install FCS2

hey Jerry, i think your idea is better than getting a new harddrive… your sure that moving templates won’t effect my computer or FCP in my system? can i burn them to a disk? is there anything you’d recommend moving/erasing within my system to give up space for the new FCP??

I don’t know what’s on your system to get rid of… LOL…
But it will not hurt to put those templates on another drive. In each app (DVD SP, livetype, Motion) you select the preferences to tell the apps where to look for the templates.

haha, yeah i see your right. i’m just turning them all into zip files and burning them.. infact, i want to burn all the temps to dvds instead as well, do you see any problems w/ this?

Sorry, I’m actually alittle bit confused about your instructions to look at preferences and you can find the templates… can you explain this further?

There is a path name to a directory which contains the templates. You can change this, putting them on another drive.

In Motion, open the Motion preferences found in the Motion menu… on the front page you see the path names to templates and livefonts… If you remove them, you could place them on another drive like a FW drive… and access them that way.
In Livetype, The media files are located in Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/LifeType/Templates. You could move them, then add their new location to the window that opens when you select LiveType’s Preferences. Then LT will look for templates in this new location.
In DVD SP, the location of styles and templates is near the same path as in LiveType, however in the DVD SP folder. To reset them to a new location, the preferences for DVD SP you can change the location of where DVD SP looks for these…
I’d not want to lose them altogether, but you won’t hurt anything doing so… I’d put them on an external drive and reset where the various apps look for them, and if all is well, delete the originals…
