Thinking about buying a new system and now seems a good time to do so what with the arrival of the new 12 core systems, thinking of getting it specced to the max (32Gb or RAM, 2 x ATI Radeon HD 5770, 2 x 2.93GHz etc)to allow for future proofing.

    What do other people think?

    All input welcome,

    Thanks

Can’t go wrong with a machine like that, going to run you 10 grand or more.

The processors themselves are faster, but I don’t think FCP is multi-threaded yet. You might not benefit from the dozen cores.

If you use Maya or some other 3D software, that’s where you’ll see the biggest speed boost.

    Thanks,

I’m hoping the rumoured new FCP will support Hyper threading…

you people take good drugs, can you send me some ?

Do you actually think that Apple is rewriting FCP and compressor to support the 12 cores? If I am wrong, I will send you $100 each.

I certainly hope that Apple will update FCP so that it will be multithreaded and 32-bit. This would be overdue.

Compressor can use 12 cores today. You have to set up a virtual cluster and submit your job to your cluster instead of “This Computer.” Compressor will launch multiple instances (running on multiple cores), split the job, compress the segments, and then stitch them back together seamlessly into a single file.
