New studio I/o
Hello hive mind.
I want to upgrade our I/o and would really like to find something that can provide 4K 10 bit outputs with 5.1 surround sound. I’ve got this with separate devices at the moment but there is latency between the video output in fcpx and resolve when using our I/o audio card. This is a major pita when we picture lock and then want to sound mix with the client – it’s impossible unless we sound mix in fcpx and that just won’t cut it.
Any suggestions? Or do I need to go down the protools route for audio mastering and buy a thunderbolt3 device for that?

If you are using Resolve, you are stuck with BMD gear for i/o. There will always be latency with their devices when the a/v path is going through 2 separate units. I have separate audio and video i/o and have found that it’s a crapshoot with Resolve. Sometimes you push play and it’s dead-on, then the next time it isn’t.
With BMD your only choices are the UltraStudio 4K products, but I don’t see where they support 5.1. Maybe via HDMI output? Or maybe something in tandem with their Fairlight hardware. But the BMD website largely buries the Fairlight hardware, so I don’t know the answer to that.
I would suggest going the ProTools or Logic Pro X mastering route if you want to do it right with your client.

FWIW, with SDI to the monitor, and then taking audio analog audio out of that monitor I have no latency with my Ultrastudio Express. However if I tap audio off the computer audio out, it will be in sync with the computer screen instead, which is usually a frame or two ahead from the SDI out monitor. Remember good old FCP legacy had that nice little setting that would lag the computer screen by X frames? “Playback offset” I think it was. Usually somewhere between 2-4 was the spot depending on your gear.

Yes that’s right – there is a similar setting in Logic Pro X, but it seems a bit flakey for reliable sync. It seems as though the only way would be to de-embed the audio from the SDI outs, and then re-embed to XLR so that is going to get pricey. The best way is to either; use Ultrastudio 4K and stop doing 5.1 for client previews on a video monitor, or buy a new thunderbolt 2/3 I/O and use Protools.

Yes in a big studio with machines down the hall or something I’m not sure how you’d do it. But in my little home suite I have the SDI going to my Flanders Scientific monitor, and then have the audio out of the monitor going to my powered speakers. I suppose you could also route it to a board. Sync is fine. I don’t usually use it that way, just when I need to test critical sync, or when I need to show to client, but I can also just show full screen on the computer (shift cmd f) and have audio in sync coming from computer. I pretty much relegate the production monitor to color correction tasks and compositing so I can see a full screen output while at the same time adjusting transform/cropping/etc controls in FCPX.
