I just bought a PNY 32 G class 10 SD card for $40! I haven’t tried it yet, so I’m not endorsing it. I’ll try it on non-critical shoots.

I saw some new brands I’ve never heard of, Centon & Patriot. Does anyone have any experience with any of these new cards?

    Then I saw a 600x Sandisk 32 for just over $400.

Just saw this 64 Gig Class 10 SD Card. Looks interesting, but not sure I want that much media on one card.

The SanDisk 600x is a Compact Flash card, not SDHC. Class 10 listing alone is not really useful for our purpose. Class 10 only means minimum sustained rate of 10 MB/second. Some cards such as the SanDisks also rate maximum sustained speed, which in their class 4 is 15MB/s and their class 10 it’s 30MB/s. I have seen that rating to be more reliable than minimum rating.

    SanDisk says this:

Thanks for the article. I didn’t pay attention to the Compact Flash since there wasn’t a photo and it was mixed among the SD cards, I missed that. But, some people use the Nano Flash recorder on top of their cameras, so it might be useful to them.

It is recommended a minimum of class 6 SD cards, so having a minimum does give a starting point. I’m currently using class 6, as that was the fastest available at the time I made the purchase. Like always, something faster and cheaper is always on the horizon.

I think some have been using class 2 cards with no problems, believe it or not.

Wow, I don’t think I’d risk using less than class 6.

Since the new firmware upgrade, the compatibility issues have mostly been fixed. I know I’ve lost important footage twice before I upgraded my firmware with media restore problems.

Like everything in our business, there will always be faster, cheaper options around the corner.
