I’m fairly new to After Effects and Premier Pro though I’m a graphic designer and use CS2 daily. I’m working on a new project (and have done a similar project once before in AE but am still learning as I go) and could use help.

I’m creating a graduation video in Premier Pro and am using mostly candid stills. However, I would like to add a ‘yearbook page’ section which would include a yearbook opening to the page showing about 6 student photos (transitioning from kindergarten photo to current) all transitioning through their photos then page turning to the next page and new photos until I get through 90 photos.

I’m not sure of the approach. I found a couple of videos on iStock that were books opening to the first page which I think then I could work with? I’m not sure how to begin here and I may have set out to create something way out of my skill set as a newbie.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance…

You could make multiple PSD files or a layered PSD file of all the pages of the book, and then make the layers into 3D layers and rotate them with keyframes.

Unforunately, that would only give you rigid turning pages, instead of a nice elegant page curl as you fold the pages over. Look through the 3D effects and see if you can’t combo it with a 3D effect like cylinder or bend?

(darn, I gotta get home in front of my AE machine to answer this question properly)

Thx for the info. I had thought about creating the individual .psd or .ai files of the yearbook pages (one with the kinder photos then the same file but with current photo… then create the multiple pages until I get all 90 kids in). What I’m then not sure about is how to bring it into AE (or do I even need to or can I use a pre-made page turn file and layer my psd or ai files on top of it directly in premier pro)? Not sure if I’m taking the right approach. Thx again for any help you can offer.

You could even use PDFs if you wanted to, since AE reads them.

I looked around, and there is actually a CC page turn effect that sort of does the trick. You might be able to get away with it, but it’s not truly a 3D effect. If you made it a 3D object, you would see it’s just a 2D effect on the face of your solid or shape, but could work. It’s more like a page curl tear-away rather than fold-over. It allows you to define a front and a back too, and keyframe the fold position.
