We’re in need of new monitors. Surprisingly I’m having a heck of a time finding any good information on the web regarding what would be the best monitor for our use here. I’m hoping you guys can help out.

A quick search on these boards has got me thinking that I’m in the very small minority in that I work exclusively in film. I couldn’t give a rats behind what my projects look like on video/tv/dvd/web, etc. My final output is always film. I work with extremely large resolutions (4K and up), so the more real estate the better as far as monitor goes…24″ and up would be best.

So…what I’m looking for is the best possible monitor for both sharpness/clarity as well as color depth/contrast. We’ll be using the montior to color correct for film output, so we need to be able to calibrate the monitor to represent what our final film output will look like as closely as possible. Our current monitors are getting long in the tooth and are losing their sharpness, contrast and color saturation.

My first thoughts were the 30″ monitors from Dell or Apple, but I’ve heard that they have extremely limited calibration controls.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks!

Well, best for sharpness would be a TFT screen. Best for color fidelity would be a large CRT.

The Dell and Apple screens are okay, but can by no means be considered reliable for accurate color monitoring – partly due to a lack of calibration options.

For color accurate TFT’s with good calibration options start looking at eCinema and CineTal

    https://cinetal.com/

These are the industry standard for color accurate TFT monitoring – but they max out at 1920×1080.

Eizo has a couple of options in their high-end segment, such as:
