I am starting to get pretty good at color correction (at least in a relative sense) and feel I need a better monitor. Not looking for “reference-grade” monitor, but would like to get one that is better than my 10-year old Panasonic “CCTV” monitor.

In addition to good calibration controls, I’d like one that also has a firewire input, if possible. Huge is not necessary, 15-inch or so would be adequate.

My limitation is on the price side of the equation. Anyone have a recommendation in the $4-600 price range?

I’d knock the firewire on the head and get a standard def (presumably you are working standard def?) Decklink Pro card and use the composite output into a decent CRT domestic TV. I think you will still get a better result than via firewire, plus you will be set up with as many outputs as you will ever need when you can afford a secondhand broadcast monitor, plus you can now output/capture to anything upto D1 or Digibeta tape if you’re RAID is fast enough.
