I really like the idea of a Thunderbolt laptop and plan to get a 17″ Macbook Pro for running Resolve in the field and the Blackmagic Thundebolt 3D Studio box looks great.

    However…..

Thundebolt is only 4X PciE which seems pretty weak for adding additional GPU’s which typically operate at 16X (6.4GT/S) per GPU. The Cubix operates at 16X and splits that amongst the slots in the box.

There are storage controllers which operate at 8X PciE speed…

So it just leaves me questioning the performance of a machine which is in a studio where you would want multiple fast GPU’s to work with and possibly faster storage than a thunderbolt port can support.

Ive been playing this game with Apple for years and its always the same.
    Budget starts in April.
Wait for August then if nothing happens, buy buy buy!
This time I cant wait, I need to upgrade the Avid system for the Resolve/Avid monster Im building 🙂
    Recent Avid Mac Pro is a 1, 1 😛
With the Cubix no need for TB yet.

For what it’s worth, keep in mind PCIe 3.0 is out and already discussion of a competing standard to Thunderbolt with way more bandwidth for external connectivity. Tom’s Hardware article I read recently indicated a 40Gbps chipset for external connectivity will be available later this year or early next year.

If Steve Jobs is willing to kiss-off the professional markets by eliminating PCIe slots, adobe and avid will be laughing all the way to the bank.

In the professional world, at least the network television/studio feature level, the vast, vast majority of shows are cut on Avid, running on Macs. A number of years ago, Avid attempted to move its focus to Windows and met with incredible resistance. I doubt they would try that tactic again, regardless of what Apple does or not do with their own focus and software efforts.

On the other hand, Avid is not really “laughing all the way to the bank.” They are redoubling their efforts to capture the lions share of the “ex FCP” crowd by doing things like minimizing or eliminating their proprietary hardware in favor of commodity video cards like AJA and Blackmagic, and expanding the usefulness and integration of AMA to allow much more seamless integration of camera native file formats. I think by NAB next Spring you’re likely to see a very open Avid, one that has everything people liked about FCP (resolution independence, cheap hardware, etc.) with a few other goodies thrown in (frame sequence support, perhaps). Just my opinion, but I’ve seen a lot of evidence to support it.

I agree. A Windows version introduces a whole host of new issues, both on the development side and post-sales support side, which I doubt BMD/DaVinci would want to tackle.

Dont get me wrong, I love the Mac.
I love it so much, I overlook most of its shortcomings just because it works so well out of the box.
My MacPro is the most beautiful computer ever built, and yes, I will probably try to upgrade its CPUs rather than downsize to a rack mountable pizza box.

I am just jealous when i see how much performance those experienced hackintosh users get from their systems.
Even with all the time and effort they need to put in, the results are amazing.

Speaking of AVIDs, in the past, they needed to run from external chassis too, so maybe thats the way professional systems have to be.
    Modular and loud.

But yes…moving back to windows gives me the shivers too.
