This is starting at the basics. I just purchased a new 17 inch MacBook Pro and migrated my files from my MacPro. Everything works handily except for FCP 7.0.3. When I try to open it, I get a window asking for a serial number. I have the original discs and packaging and entered the number. Then I’m informed it’s not a valid serial number. Repeat, same result. Groundhog Day.

When I bought the laptop, I specifically asked if FCP 7 would migrate, and was told it would with no problems. Not so much. I’ve seen a number of posts like this on the Apple support forums, but no solutions. Of course, the new computer is running on Lion, which I’ve avoided until this point.

Any help would be great! Thanks.

You should never migrate pro software using the Migration assistant.

Delete all of your pro applications and do a proper install from the original discs.

Thanks Walter. My question would be, which original discs? I have the Final Cut Studio V3.0 upgrade, and the Final Cut Studio 2.0.1 version, which is also an upgrade.

I’ve never needed to uninstall FCP completely, so can I do the installation solely from the upgrade discs?

    Thanks again.

Install FCS 3. To make the install faster in the future, create a Disk Image of your FCS discs.

Thanks! In the end it took the elimination of the FCP ident file, an uninstall, reinstall from FCS3, the serial number from FCS3, and then a new serial number generated at Apple tech support.

Apple still reluctantly providing support for FCP7 even though the 90 days since the termination of the app have expired.
