REC 709. You want an IPS/LCD or equivalent monitor for HD/Blu-ray work because it’s the same technology used in most HD TV’s. What you can’t do with these monitors is SD work. For that you need a CRT although some of the high-end LCD’s claim they can do SD as well.

With an IPS panel, do you profile it for sRGB, RGB, or rec.709? or all three depending upon what you are doing? Your panel is close to Adobe RGB 1998, would a sRGB IPS panel suffice for most video work?
From reading many posts, and articles on color management for NLE, not print work, many are advocating feeding a signal to a HDTV with a non-computer (dvi) connection as they say the “signal” is processed differently that way and is closer to what the consumer would see, so that’s how they are grading their work (non-SD)I used to work in a post facility, many years ago, all analog gear, SD, so this makes sense to me, but…
All a bit confusing, as there is no real discussion of this within the manual for VP11, every software package could be considered a “filter” in analog-speak. I have been running a color managed system for photoshop since 5.5, so I have an understanding of how color management works for print. This does not seem to be as obvious in NLE’s, or am I missing something?
I appreciate your input as you are running VP11 as well and I’m trying to get a reasonably (affordable) workflow implemented for non-broadcast work. The few times I made a DVD, there was a noticeable difference in color and density, so this is something that I would like to have a better understanding of and control over. For print work, there is a “soft proofing” method that works reasonably well, but this does not seem to be the case with NLE’s.

I calibrate my monitor with a Spyder 3 Elite and use that profile for color grading.

Analog does make sense for SD but HD is digital so I don’t see the point. In fact, if you are using an HDTV I can almost guarantee your color will be wrong because all TV’s use different filters to “enhance” the signal. It will only be closer to what the consumer who bought the same brand HDTV as you sees… not what all consumers will see. You would be much better off using a monitor that is calibrated than a consumer TV.

If you weren’t using a properly calibrated monitor that could make all the difference in the world. Calibrators like the Spyder 3 aren’t that expensive and really make a big difference.

Interesting article on 30 bit cards, I am running a 24 bit card now, I would have to upgrade my monitor and card to run the Asus monitor.

December 19, 2011 at 9:01 pmRecently purchased the ASUS PA 238; an 8 bit panel which works with my 8 bit graphics card. Updated my Spyer3 pro to Elite to get a better feature set and Rec 709, etc color space profile ability. Seems to be working well, still playing around with the settings to see the difference between the ASUS and my old Viewsonic, they are close but the ASUS has more controls and inputs.
Next upgrade? 10 bit panel and a new card later this year.
