[Pete] “Last week I broke down and got a 20″ iMac, thinking they’d never fulfill my requests for a better Laptop….Now this!!”

    Pete,

If it was only a week ago, you can return it assuming it was not a special order or build to order machine. This from Apple’s website:

    “Product returns and refunds
Apple accepts returns of pre-built products only. If you are not satisfied with your pre-built product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the product.”

This happens every time new hardware comes out.

The bottom line is this… can you make money with the equipment that you bought? If not then why did you buy such a computer?

Having bought one of the first G5’s when they came out, I wouldn’t buy a Rev 1 machine from now on. I will let them work out the bugs first.

Make money with what you have and then don’t ever buy before, Macworld in January, NAB in April, Mac Dev Conf in June and the usual update in Sept/October. Doesn’t leave much time left in the year, but at least you won’t be made when your new purchase is out of date by the next week.

Excellent point…. 1st generation computers are always buggy. And as nice as the Intel machine is on the iMac, I was a little disappointed that we didn’t see higher processor speeds (above 2.5Ghz, etc…). I don’t know all the technical stuff, but its still a fast machine…and I think it will only get faster once they move to the desktop models.

I feel your pain…I bought the family a iMac for Christmas. Photo Booth was a big hit at our New Years party 🙂
I don’t plan on making any money with the iMac, so I’m not too mad. I didn’t think the iMac would receive the Intel chip. I fully expected new laptops and desktops…considering the iMac with iSight was recently released. Oh well.

I run a small business so I’ll wait for extensive feedback from the FCP community. I guarantee only ROCKY ROADS ahead. New computers, New Hardware, New OS…. be prepared for major updates and upgrades similar to the OS9—> OSX transition.
I think it took 6 months to a year before all video components would work right under OSX. Capture cards, Video Cards, External hardware, software, Plugins, ALL NEED TO BE ON BOARD!!!!

Relax, and enjoy what you have now!! Save your money!

[Pete] “The day I spent my $ on the iMac I asked the Apple Store Mgr. “any chance of a better laptop being unvieled by Jobs next month”. “No, definitlet not, I’d know if there was even a hint”, that was his reply.”

I’m sorry, but one or both of you guys have had your head in the sand for the last couple of months. It was pretty common knowledge (at least on all the major news sites on the web) that Intel transition was FAR ahead of schedule, and that there would be new products announced at MacWorld.

As someone who’s also been chomping at the bit for an IMac I’m honestly not gloating, but would you really buy something a week before NAB? Why would you do that with MacWorld? In any case, I have no doubt that after I buy an IMac, a few months later Apple will finally add Fire800 capabilities, or something that I’ll really want but don’t have. Enjoy what you bought – it’s not like it became obsolete today…Finally, do you actually think things would be different if you owned PC hardware and software?

    Sheeeshus!!!”

Gee, the last I looked you have 14 days to return a machine to Apple. At least that is how it works at the Apple Store. I picked up an iBook a few months ago and about a week later realized a Mac Mini would do the trick.

If you really bought it last week, return it and then purhcase a new one.

that’s what Apple just did with my iLife ’05s. I got them two weeks ago. They issued a return order for the old and shipped the new.

Everyone who purchases anything Apple knows to never, ever buy anything when MacWorld and the WWDC are upon us. Wait until after those are over and then purchase. What I saw from yesterday’s conference has me very excited about the future of Apple and I’m really happy with where Steve Jobs is taking the company.

I’ll second that, the whole product range is going to be Intel by the end of the year. The new IntelMac Desktops should be blazing fast and as Mac owners we’ll never have to argue about speed differences with PC owners again!

BTW Why would you buy a Mac in the week before Macworld!!!

I agree with Walter. Yesterdays conference makes me very excited about where Apple is headed. Any professional that uses computers should know that new computers come all the time, and just because something new comes along that is faster it doesn’t mean what you had before is obsolete.

In this case you REALLY had to have you head in the sand not to see this coming. This has been in the news everywhere for months. I mainly operate in the PC world and I can tell you that PC vendors really didn’t start talking about their Core Duo systems until after the CES show last week. They couldn’t really talk about their systems until Intel released them and of course just like Apple they didn’t want you to stop buying the older systems. Apple is not the bad guy here.

And let’s not forget about WallStreet. Apple is kickin ass right now! got-dayum!!!! 🙂
Forget buying a Mac before the expo….anybody in this business should have bought more shares before Steve opened his mouth. The investment alone would have bought you a shiny new MacBook Pro!!!
    (Sadly, I didn’t)

Pete, I undertand your frustration as do most of the previous posters. But, I figured I would throw in my 2 cents. you stated you really wanted a laptop for portability. Where are you taking your iMac? Yeah they sell those silly little sleeves but is it truly portable no. So by purchasing the iMac did you really fulfill the void you were looking to? No. the MacBook Pro is not too far from it beign a viable tool in our industry but it is not there yet. By time it is your iMac will have been replaced by a new iMac…. oh wait it already has. have your beef over the new iMac not the new MacBook Pro. Then I will agree with calling people names.
