New laptop
Posted by Roberto Cerini on December 16, 2010 at 9:15 pmI will be buying a new laptop soon. I was actually thinking about picking up a Sony VAIO with the i5 processor. Will it suffice to run Premiere and After Effect? I am also looking at an ASUS G73JH A1.
Thanks
Rob

December 17, 2010 at 10:39 amI would go with something that has a i7 processor, I’ve been looking at some of the Toshiba Qosmio line

December 17, 2010 at 4:24 pmI have a Toshiba Quosmo X505-898, running CS5, under $2k. I edit with the XDCAM-EX timeline without issues. An external SATA raid is helpful, but not critical. Obviously, the more you spend, the faster your renders are – so it depends really what you are trying to do. There is a CS5 Premiere Pro benchmarking site you can Google. My Quosmo is on the list – so you can check out the results yourself. Good luck!

December 18, 2010 at 10:39 amIf you want to take advantage of CS5’s Mercury Playback Engine, you really want an nVidia graphics card with at least 1GB memory and 96 cuda cores. No need for the more expensive Quadro FX line, some GeForce gaming cards may work as well, although you have to change a little text file inside CS5.

December 18, 2010 at 10:11 pmThe Toshiba Qosmio that was mentioned uses a Nvidia GTX460M which has 192 cores and uses DDR5 1gig memory, and AFAIK there aren’t any Mobile cards mentioned approved for use so the hack is necessary, and some kind of laptop cooling like extra fans is recommended

December 20, 2010 at 2:07 pmPremiere CS5 5.0.3 now ‘fully’ supports the Quadro 5000M card. My Quosmo has the 460M and works with the hack. (A 10.3x improvement according to benchmark tests)

December 22, 2010 at 9:18 pmHow does this laptop rate as far as screen quality and is anyone using for audio production as well?
Also, why the extra cooling?
Thanks,
Roberto

December 23, 2010 at 7:33 amLooking at the Toshiba, it looks like it does not have a dual monitor video card. Is that right? Is it an option? Can you get a lappy with similar specs, BUT with the dual head card?
Thanks for all the help. I’m green when it comes to laptops, other than home use ones.
