Still in pursuit of the perfect Split Screen Effect, I have come up with this new 3-way split version with a large left hand screen and two half size screens at the right.

    2584_3wayassymetric.zip

    There are now controls for:

    – adjustable rounded corners to the masks;
    – animation of the image boxes so they can slide into position (0x/0y are the default positions but you could always make a different arrangement, e.g. with the large box on the right);
    – plus the usual border color, source image resize and reposition.

Note I tried to use the Clamp Behavior to limit where the boxes could move to to make it easier for the end-user, but this functionality wouldn’t carry over into FCPX out of Motion – hence the ability to move the boxes anywhere of your choosing.

    Enjoy.

PS. the fox was in my neighbour’s garden (back-yard, if you prefer) the other day enjoying the sunshine.

    Very nice addition, nicely done.

The box / split screen king!

[Brendan Gibbons] “The box / split screen king!”

And I don’t think I’ll ever be using them myself – but it’s a fun challenge all the same. I hardly need to tell you of all people how crazily addictive it is making this stuff 😉

What would be a nice addition to this publishing / rigging functionality would to be able to hide / show drop zone boxes in the parameters.

Say if you wanted to have 10 different versions of a boxes effect, it would good if when you selected a 2box example from a dropdown menu it would only show 2 dropzones, because as it stands I believe you have to show all the possible dropzones….leading to a crowded parameter pane in fcp.

Does that make sense? I usually don’t !

    Cheers,

    Brendan

Yes I know, slightly addictive….but I prefer to call it “learning out loud”!

I feel if that I share a small bit, I can feel less guilty about all the great info I’m getting to soak up here 😉

    Cheers,

I’m probably being dense and not understanding what you’re suggesting here, though I’ve no doubt it’s a good idea and would love to try it.

I did start off with the idea of having a drop-down system where you could select different layouts/different numbers of boxes but it seemed as though it would lead to massive complications (my first attempt had a 2/3 way option but I left it at that), as against just choosing for example a 3-way or a 6-way.

But if you’ve got a challenge for me, then I’m your man!

It’s more of a missing functionality from the rigging process I think.

You can build all the preset box styles in motion, and it’s easy to hide / show them using rigging.

    e.g 2 box, 3 box, 4 box, 9 box etc.

But in total if there was about 20 different dropzones in the project they would all show up back in fcp X in the parameters inspector.

Which with all the parameters you can add it can get confusing pretty quickly.

So if you were able to rig dropzones so that they only appeared when you selected a preset from a rigged dropdown it would be ideal.

e.g back in FCP select “3 box style” from rigged dropdown and then it only showed 3 dropzones. Select “2 box style” from rigged dropdown and then it only showed 2 dropzones.

I hope it actually can’t do this after my complaining 😉

I’m probably missing a trick but I can’t seem to see a way of rigging it so that you can affect drop zone visibility in the published parameters … did you have an idea for that?

I was just reading my post back, and I think it came across as if I was asking you if you could rig the dropzone visibility in your templates.

I was meaning that it appears it’s something not possible currently within motion anyway.

The only way I can think is that you would create a different preset per version

    Damn!

I feel some apple feedback action coming on…

[Brendan Gibbons] “The only way I can think is that you would create a different preset per version”

That was pretty much what I was reduced to thinking – which is why I made my “multi-pack” of different versions. I think from the user point of view it’s probably just as easy to pick the template that you want from the effects browser as to select it from within the effect’s own controls.

But you’re absolutely right that it would be really nice to be able to limit which controls were visible in the exported template depending on a check-box state – especially for creating Simplified and Extended/Advanced user interfaces.

Hi, I’m trying to download the link you provided for the rounded corner boxes – but keep getting the dreaded 404 error message – has it been removed from this site?
