NEW FCPX Round Badge Effect
Posted by Simon Ubsdell on July 25, 2011 at 7:34 pmProbably not actually useful to anybody but since it was something I was working on for a pitch anyway I thought I’d post it –
– an effect that will stick your source image on a badge, with controls for:
– Convex amount;
– Bevel width and softness;
– Shininess;
– Light rotation;
– Source position and scale;
– Badge rotate, position and scale;
– Drop shadow opacity, distance and blur*.* Drop shadow angle is controlled by Light rotation.

August 21, 2011 at 7:16 pmFirst off – thanks so much for all your hard work and sharing it with all of us. That is awesome.
I am using your badge effect for a video I am making and love it. One thing I am doing is using some logo .png’s with transparent backgrounds and am wanting to change the color of the badge background from the default white to another color.
I am going to try it myself in Motion 5 – but wondered if you had any tips.
Thanks again for your fantastic willingness to build and share.

August 21, 2011 at 8:03 pmHi Michael
Glad you’re finding this useful – I wasn’t sure it would be of much use to anybody 😉
Here’s a new version of the effect with options for giving the badge a color – you might want also to play with the image tint amount to get the look you’re going for.

Do let me know if you need anything else. Depending on what you are doing, you might want a bit more control over the lighting elements.

August 21, 2011 at 8:16 pmyour Awesome.
I figured out that if I just added Color Solid Motion generator to the Effect Source group and placed it below the Effect Source option it gave me that ability.
I am now trying to add a color choosing option for your ‘lighting’ as well and see how that looks.
Thanks so much.
btw – How do I post it on here so you can see what i did?

August 21, 2011 at 8:24 pmUnfortunately you’re not going to get a good effect by trying to change the “lighting” colours – those layers are really just there for brightening and darkening the highlights and shadows and won’t look good in color. But you might be able to make it work!
Hopefully my new version gives you enough control that you can get the color you want … I think you need to be able to control the image color and the edges of the badge separately which is why I gave you the controls I did.
If you want to post your video, look for the video upload icon at the top of the message input panel – it’s the second along from the right.
Look forward to seeing the results!

August 21, 2011 at 8:42 pmCool – thanks.
I did something a little different than you did. By creating the solid background color generator as mentioned above and publishing the ‘brush’ from lighting to the same rig I was able to both change the badge background and the lighting outline color. It looks awesome:
Here is what it looks like in FCP X:
And here is the place I added the Solid Color Generator under your Effect Source:
