    Hi Guys,

I work a shop and we are thinking of upgrading out FCP system, we do commercials, corporate and web content. We have been shooting a lot of RED and D5 footage lately but also ingest P2, Beta SP, Digi Beta, HDV,etc.I was wondering if I could get you opinion or suggestions about the system.

    Mac Pro
    2 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    8GB (4x2GB)
    2 1 TB drives
    2x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB (i’ll be running 2 monitors)

Will I need a Fiber Optic Card?

    For Storage we’re looking at

G-Speed es with a eSATA card

    And a Kona 3 Card

    Thanks,

    George

You don’t need two video cards to run two monitors. The ATi upgrade card is the best of the bunch value wise, and will speed Motion, Color and some FCP renders…

Kona 3 card is the best ticket out there to work with all those formats… RED 2k will convert to HD in real time for monitoring purposes with this card, and (FWIW) it works with 3D too…

If you’re a “power user” and want to run more than one app at a time, I’d look at a bit more RAM. You can add it later of course though… Motion, AE, Photoshop all use a ton of RAM.

I’d also look closely at CalDigit arrays for storage. US company for starters. Service is excellent with them for sure.

Don’t think a single system would need a Fibre Optic card… They’d be used for sharing media files between systems.

If your going to be working in uncompressed HD you may need to work on a fiber optic network. I have heard that with the new 10 gig Ethernet cable you can achieve similar results but it isn’t out for a few months. If you really want to know post you questions in the SAN forum.

Thanks for all the info. As for the Caldigit would you suggest the HDOne?

It’s a great unit indeed. Probably a review here on the COW about it.
