  • New FCP Suite and camera/format recommendations

Posted by Bill Kirksom on February 4, 2009 at 11:22 pm

We’re putting together a proposal at work for a new FCP Suite and possibly a new camera/format. We currently have a Sony Z1 that we capture to FCP 6, but since we have the opportunity, we’re looking to start with the latest and greatest. We produce company promos, training videos etc. and we want to stay HD. With this in mind, I’d like to get suggestions for new Mac set-up, Camera suggestions, Edit desk suggestions etc, or recommendation for a company in NY that can set all this up for us. Thanks so much!

Read the latest Cow magazine and Jeremy Garchow’s article about the Panasonic 2000 camera and the AVC-Intra codec. One of my clients did and he’s ready to sell his HVX-900 for the 2000. It looks incredibly promising as an HD format.

A good person to talk to about FCP systems and installations in Finer Associates out of Boston. He’s an Apple and AJA authorized dealer, and does installs (high and low end) up and down the east coast. He knows his stuff pretty well, and his prices are pretty good. He’ll do a whole turnkey set up if you need, including furniture/racks. Ask for Steve, he’s a technical guy and will not try to sell you anything you don’t really need.

If you’re working EX why do you need a Kona 3? There’s no dual link or 2k involved…

If its just for monitoring or laying to tape go for an LHe or even blackmagic hdextreme if you’re not capturing or converting alot of footage from HDCAM/digi etc..

If you’re going mac then your camera/format will determine what level of hardware you need to bolt on. Bigger data rates = bigger, faster, better storage. If you’re working below Pro Res even an internal 4TB raid on a caldigit card will be good enough.

As standard you should look at

    8 Core 3.0/3.2 GHZ
    Minimum 10GB RAM
Radeon 3870 GFX Card (Pref over the 8800 – too many problems with this card)
    FCP

Then decide what format you’re gonna work with, then fit everything else around that.

[Jamie Allan] “If you’re working EX why do you need a Kona 3? There’s no dual link or 2k involved.”

Because a Kona 3 does much more than dual link or 2k.
Up / Down conversion in realtime,

720 to 1080 and 1080 to 720 cross conversion in realtime.

Codec conversion in realtime. (i.e. 8bit to DV, DV to 8bit, DVCPro HD to 8bit, etc..)

It’s a pretty much anything in / anything out box. If you’re working professionally in HD, it’s the card you want in your machine.

Fair enough, but I was going along the lines of the work being done by the person asking the questions. If they’re working with company promos and training videos there may be very little scope for that level of hardware conversion. I’d expect their delivery to be mostly online, DVD or bluray, but I guess its more down to what their clients require though.

So, if you feel the work may require the additional capabilities of the Kona 3 then go for it, if not the LHe would be sufficient. Is that a better way to put it? 🙂
