New FCP on none intel based machine?
Hey all,
I’m having trouble getting a straight answer about this so thought I’d ask here. We’re thinking of investing in an older, none intel based Mac. At the moment we’re running FCS2 but are thinking of upgrading to FCS3. In particular will Final Cut Pro have trouble running on a non-intel based machine from either of these packages?

The specs say no, both for FCS2 and 3. I saw a post from someone a while back that had a workaround to do this. Couldn’t find it in a search, must not have the right key word.
But since you say your running FCS2 on a non-Intel, I think you already have the answer.
IMHO buying a non-Intel mac isn’t what I would call an ‘investment’. For an audio server, or other use these may be fine, but for editing, a non-Intel machine is a boat anchor.Scott Sheriff

The requirements clearly state that FCS 3 will only work on an Intel. Mac.
If you are a serious editor, you need to keep up with the current technology. Time is money.

Sorry I wasn’t clear, I currently work on a mac pro, and we’re in need of a new edit station. The boss however doesn’t want to invest in another expensive machine, and did a deal for an old non-intel based machine. I told him off the bat that it wont run FCP, but the seller is being contrary (for obvious reasons), so I just wanted to make absolutely sure before I get into an argument about this.
This is in no way me not being “serious”. Thank you for your response, much appreciated.

Simply go to your boss’ computer and tell him to bring up the following:

That’s about as straight an answer as he is going to get. “Mac computer with an Intel processor” is the first thing it says. Unless you want to try to hack the software to work on a PowerPC, it ain’t gonna work.
Look at the Refurb section of the Apple Website for deals and also know you don’t need the most expensive machine to run FCP.

Works in PPC same than in Intel.

The software will run on PPC.
You need to hack the installer and replace an enabler file. I did it just to see if it was really possible, just before getting rid if my PPC machine. I can confirm that it works. That being said, several features, such as ProRes really require Intel to work.
If you are doing anything serious with it you should at least get a used Intel machine and not bother with the hack.
If you are determined to disregard that advice, you can find detailed hacking instructions on the web using Google pretty easily. -
