New FCP, Leopard and P2 camera issues
Hello All
Here goes; I have an Intell Mac with Leopard and FCP vers.3. When I get P2 material shot at 1080 / 60i (over 29.97 frames) pulled into my Mac thru Log / Transfer, the FCP tells me the files are 1080 / 30p. At the same time on my old system the FCP says the files are in fact 1080 / 60i. Then when I go to use Cinema Tools to Reverse Telecine, the CT app says file format not recognized…..
Strange things are afoot

There’s no way to rev telecine material shot @ 60i. If you shot 24p/60i yes, but not 60i or 30p.

So even though it says that your footage is 30P, you should double check to is if it is actually interlaced or progressive. Easiest way to do that is to put it up on a broadcast monitor and pause on a frame.
It’s possible that FCP 6.0.3 fixed a problem that it previously had. I don’t know if it was a problem before.
Just let use know if it’s actually interlaced or not.

Let me be clear on a few things I forgot; The video comes from P2: Vid Rate 29.97 (over 23.98) The material is shot 23.98 but pushed into 29.97 to conserve space. Compressor: 1080i 60. This vid needs to go to tape (23.98 HDCAM SR) with some HDSD9 footage. This footage is 24 frames, timeline is 23.98, hence the need for reverse telecine with Cinema Tools on the P2 material.
It is strange because this work flow was fine on vers 2 and tiger I was testing out last month.Russ

Hey Russ. I can tell that you are new to this, and that’s okay. We got ya.
1080 29.97 does not get wrapped over 24p and it definitely does not conserve sapce. You have it backwards.
1080 24p gets wrapped in 29.97 and it takes up MORE space than if you could have shot 24p natively. Shooting 1080p24 natively is not possible on most camera, especially less expensive ones.
Okay, now that we got that boring stuff out of the way, did you shoot 1080 24p or 24pA?

Right I was thinking of another work flow when I was talking about 24 over 29.97, I get the camera data cards from another outfit. They get me to process. It is P2 material for sure. The camera itself I have not seen. I don’t have issue with camera material most of the time. It comes to me at 23.98 fr rate and 1080/60i DVCPro compressor. I turn around and put it out to tape at 23.98 (HDCAm) No problems with any of this on my old system. When I bring this stuff to my new rig is where the trouble begins. Under compressor in FCP, it states the material is 1080/30p DVCPro on the NEW system, 1080/60i on the OLD. I took some old 29.97 (1080p 24 wrapped) footage I had from before brought into the new system and tried to use the Cinema Tools to reverse telecine it (take it back to 24) and the app said it did not recognize the compressor used.
Another strange thing happened yesterday, I used the NEW system to make a 24 frame (progressive) QT from 30 frame (interlace) material (by removing the pulldown) it didn’t fully work. I could still see interlace issues every 4 frames or so.

Any chance you can post a second of the material? Need to check pulldown pattern to see if it’s 24p or 24pA.

OK, I guess I have to take your word for it.
It should be working, Russ. That footage should be able to open in Cinema Tools. If it’s not, you have a problem or have done something that you aren’t telling us about OR the footage is in fact NOT 24p but 24pA in which case you can remove the pulldown in the log and transfer process and not have to deal with Cinema Tools.
