  • new digitizing problem with FCP and DSR11

I am running into a new problem when batch digitizing DVCam footage. I am using an imac with the latest FCP and a Sony DSR11 deck connected via firewire. I can operate the deck in FCP, log the shots into the project, but when I attempt to batch digitize them the machine goes through the normal scan and pre-role process but when the actual digitization begins (the video shows in the FCP digitize window) it seams to stagger on the first 2 or 3 frames and then it “fails do to detected dropped frames”. This just started two days ago. Also, I was playing back a DVD on a player that fed into my deck and showed on a monitor but when I tried to digitize from the deck the video signal was not received by FCP. The digitize window showed no video signal present. I’ve done this on a number of occasions in the past but apparently it no longer works. Was there an update that caused this? Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.

Do you have another FW device connected? If so try capturing to your internal, then moving the media with media manager to the external for editorial. Is this behavior on All tapes or just the one you’re working with?

If you don’t have another FW device, try a new user, and if that fails, try resetting the PMU or SMU on your machine. You can find the procedure searching on PMU or SMU in Apple’s Support area on the web site there. It’s different from machine to machine… but it will reset the power management on that FW bus.

    thanks Jerry
I have been working with my media on an external firewire drive. I changed the scratch track to the internal drive and that took care of it. Would I have to make the changes you mentioned in order to capture directly to the external drive?
Also, I still am not able to digitize the video from the DVD player and feeding through my DSR11. Any ideas on that front?

    thanks again
    David

Make sure your input is selected correctly and is set to non-controllable device.

Right. I had that set. Still not able to recognize or receive the signal.

DSR-11 might be detecting a copyrighted signal.

Yeah, anything copyrighted isn’t gonna work.

Actually it is a DVD with some footage from an old VHS home movie so no copyright. Just can get FCP to see that signal. I could always record onto tape and digitize but I would rather go back to how I was able to do it before. Not sure what has changed.

    Hi
Is the DSR-11’s VTR – DV EE Out menu selection on?
Check the footnote on this page for info:
