Hello, I have just installed Vegas 10 on a brand new computer running Windows 7 64 bit and I have a few questions.

1> Are there any special settings or tweaks that need to be made to the computer for running Vegas 10 smoothly?

2> Are there any special settings or tweaks that need to be made to Vegas?

3> Can I copy my render settings from my old computer (Windows XP Vegas 7) to the new computer?

4> When I view the timeline in the video preview window why does it change from “preview full” (where I set it) to “preview half” when playing, then go back to “preview full” when I stop or pause the play?

5> I view my video on a remote HD TV via firewire through a Canopus ADVC110. The playback blacks out for a second sometimes (TV only, not video preview window in Vegas) when it hits a crossover on the timeline, any thoughts on this?

FYI–Vegas 10 is new to me, I have not used in the past.

Thanks and I hope you all have a great weekend.

    Thanks
    Dave P.

[Dave Petteruto] “1> Are there any special settings or tweaks that need to be made to the computer for running Vegas 10 smoothly?”

The only tweak I usually make it to make the swap file a fixed size so that Windows allocates it all once and doesn’t have to go looking for free space to expand it. Other then that, there really isn’t a need to tweak as much as in the old days when computer power was measured in Mhz instead of GHz. Still if you feel the need to tweak, Black Viper is the ultimate tweak web site.

[Dave Petteruto] “2> Are there any special settings or tweaks that need to be made to Vegas?”

I wouldn’t say any “need” to be made. I have some personal tweaks like not having the Media Manager save usage relationships, and I like the space bar to play/pause instead of play/stop but these are personal likes.

[Dave Petteruto] “3> Can I copy my render settings from my old computer (Windows XP Vegas 7) to the new computer?”

Not easily. They are kept in hidden folders and some are not compatible across Vegas versions. For Vegas Pro 10 they are kept under:

    “%AppData%\Sony\Render Templates”

[Dave Petteruto] “4> When I view the timeline in the video preview window why does it change from “preview full” (where I set it) to “preview half” when playing, then go back to “preview full” when I stop or pause the play?”

This is a new feature in Vegas Pro 10. Right-click the Vegas preview window and disable Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback if it bothers you but then your video could stutter more when played back.

Vegas has to render these transitions on the fly and if your computer can’t keep up you will see black frames. You could prerender the timeline to avoid this.

Hi John-thanks so much for your input. I have a couple of follow-up questions for you.

John “make the swap file a fixed size so that Windows allocates it all once and doesn’t have to go looking for free space to expand it.”
    How do I do this?

When I turned off “Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback” the “black outs” stopped. Also with the same elements on the timeline in Vegas 732bit I had no “black out” problems. Is there something in the Video preview preferences that can be adjusted (dynamic ram, rendering threads or?). I can’t believe this new computer can’t keep up. Even with my older slower computers I’ve never had this “black out” issue.

    Thanks

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties | Advanced System Settings. Choose the Advanced tab and under Performance press the Settings… button. Then select the Advanced tab in that window and under Virtual memory press the Change… button. Finally, select Custom size and make the Initial size (MB) and Maximum size (MB) the same. I would use the value from the Recommended settings just below that. Then press OK until all changes are accepted.

Yea, that’s a new parameter for Vegas Pro 10. I guess you just need to keep that off when previewing to an external monitor via firewire.
