New Computer: Mac or PC
Posted by Andrew Riss on May 4, 2011 at 8:08 pmI have neem using a mac for most of my career.
Recently I have been doing more and more C4D work.I am about to get a new machine to help with all the rendering
the question:
for a 12 core machine is a PC really much cheaper? Also what experiences with hackintosh has anyone had.
also, if I were to choose a PC: custom versus pre built machine
I started looking at the custom build website, it’s very confusingI would love to hear some opinions.

May 4, 2011 at 8:17 pmI’ve always built my own PCs. If you order the motherboard and have them install the processor, that’s one less thing to worry about messing up. After that, it’s really about plugging in cables and wires to the right place. When I built my machine it cost roughly $1000 with a nice case and a good amount of RAM. The “equivalent” Mac at the time was around $2700
My machine is about 2 years old now and is still a workhorse.
Just my 2 cents. If you aren’t comfortable building a machine, you can buy a custom or stock model. Just know you won’t save as much doing so.
I currently work at a school where we only use Macs, but I use my PC at home and still love it.

May 5, 2011 at 5:38 pmexcepting that the intel xeon 5650 6 core chips are $1000 a piece (the same used in the 2.66Ghz 12 core model) so you start with $2000 right off the bat, no motherboard and no software, no OS… the faster 6 core chips are more, of course.

May 5, 2011 at 10:00 pmoh yeah, not saying it can’t be done cheaper for the hardware but it’s likely to end up 3-ish including motherboard, good videocard, drives, power supply. Then add in the OS since he doesn’t already have a copy, software changes from Mac to PC. Not saying it’s not a good way to go, it’s just never as cheap as it sounds particularly if you are switching platforms.

May 6, 2011 at 3:30 amSorry Brian – I hope that didn’t come off as a come back. I wasn’t even aware of what the 12 core Macs cost, so I thought it appropriate to mention it.
I totally agree, never as cheap as it sounds. Especially when you consider the potential for viruses, bugs, etc that Windows seems to be more susceptible to.
I ran the numbers on a 12 core PC, sure would be nice to get one for myself. If you step down just a bit from the speed the Macs offer, similar quality video card, a nice Lian Li case, 12 GB RAM and a Blu-ray burner (had to throw it in)…with operating system it comes to just over $3k. If you have to buy your Adobe suite and C4D on top of that, yea, might as well stay with a Mac assuming you own the software for it.
