I thought I had solved the aspect ratio issues years ago. It used to come from converting 720×480 DV AVI to 640×480 divx or mpg or whatever compression types I used. I forget what I had to do in early versions of Sony Vegas because with version 12.0, it essentually did it for me when I selected 4:3 or 640×480.

That was with a soure of 720×480 DV AVI

Now I have a client with DVD ready MOV files that are also 720×480

The problem once I drop them onto the timeline, Vegas 12.0 does not auto convert it to 640×480 like it would with DV files. It remains at 720×480 and it is clear it has a stretched aspect ratio that looks off.

I tried all the possible rendering options with the mainconcept mp4 codec but the end result is black bars either horizontal or vertical and still an output video that is as stretched as the source. What setting is there to produce a clean 640×480 mp4 file? I even tried to convert from MOV to DV AVI but it gave me horizontal bars at the top and bottom.

Go into the event properties on the media tab and make sure the pixel aspect ratio is set to 0.9091 DV for the MOV files.
